The World Heath Organization/AIDS Medicines and Diagnostics Service and its partner organizations initiated the development of a unique PSM Toolbox website for HIV-related health commodities. The PSM Toolbox website features a user-friendly search engine, regularly updated content, a forum to share tool use experiences and more. In addition, an offline version of the PSM Toolbox is available on CD-ROM free of charge.
Making a Difference - Global Fund Results Report 2011
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria released a 2011 results report stating that though it disbursed a record $3 billion in 2010, the $1.3 billion shortfall if faces for 2011-2013, "threaten[s] goals to roll back diseases that together claim more than four million lives a year.” Pledges from nations and private sources so far amount to $11.7 billion, but the Global Fund estimates it will require at least $13 billion and up to $20 billion to cover estimated needs. Consumers play an important public health role by reporting to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) any adverse events (unexpected side effects) after using a medical product or other problems with any products that the agency regulates. Timely reporting allows the agency to take prompt action. There are a number of ways you can report problems to the agency, depending on the type of problem and product. This tool contains tips and a chart that will help you make your report.
This new online database offers archived information on key ARV patents. Users can search the status of patents by country/region and medicine. The accessible tool will provide lasting technical support for HIV/AIDS treatment in developing countries.
The "Access to Medicine Index" report ranks 27 pharmaceutical companies on their efforts to provide access to medicines, vaccines, and diagnostic tests to people living in 88 countries. The second index report, “Index 2010" provides an overall ranking of companies and analyzes industry trends. Report cards identify each company's leading practices, the changes it has made since the last Index report and suggest areas for improvement.
Report of the Market Dynamics and Commodities Ad-Hoc Committee
The Global Fund says that its Voluntary Pooled Procurement (VPP) programme has resulted in increased pooling of demand, and has contributed to price stabilisation and market sustainability for the medicines that it covers. However, a number of challenges remain. This information is contained in a report prepared for the Global Fund Board meeting in December 2010. According to the Global Fund, 42 countries representing 83 grants have participated in the VPP, far exceeding expectations. A total of $384 million in orders were confirmed by September 2010, 91% of which were for core products - long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) (78%), antiretrovirals (ARVs) (10%) and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) (3%).

SCMS case study published in new guide to supply chain management
SCMS is featured in the third edition of "Essentials of Supply Chain Management," by author Michael Hugos. This textbook targets the core concepts and techniques of supply chain management, with tips on best practices for technology use, and numerous executive interviews and case studies. Featuring SCMS as supply chain management "in the real world," the book describes the background of the project and efforts to transform public health supply chains in developing countries.
"30 Years of HIV/AIDS: A USAID Historical Perspective
Building on the strength of PEPFAR and other successful US global health initiatives, USAID is working at an interagency level to ensure President Obama’s Global Health Initiative replicates and amplifies the success of our HIV/AIDS programs through a continued focus on health system strengthening and investments in innovation. Our award-winning Supply Chain Management System project has provided more than $750 million in HIV/AIDS commodities and saved $700 million by pooling procurements of generic AIDS drugs.
"Supply Chain Heroes" featured in USAID's Frontlines Publication
"They are the invisible architects of the battle against HIV/AIDS, managing global drug supplies from the shadows. Six years after PEPFAR's Supply Chain Management System was established, there are virtually no stockouts of life-saving anti-retroviral drugs in PEPFAR-supported programs. The program provides enough ARVs to support well over half the 3.2 million people on treatment through PEPFAR. The program, administered by USAID, has helped turn doubters into believers."
Smart Investments: Making the Most of Every Dollar Invested
PEPFAR's Fact Sheet outlines ways that programs are ‘getting a bigger bang for the buck.’ The fact sheet cites SCMS’s efforts to reduce shipping costs by switching from air freight to sea and land. In addition, it highlights success in driving down the cost of ARVs and current activities to support male circumcision.
As a partner of USAID, PFSCM manages a project under PEPFAR to provide a consistent (and safe) supply of medicines and health products for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment. PFSCM has helped USAID deliver more than $600 million in supplies to countries supported by the PEPFAR initiative. PFSCM, which also does similar work to help fight malaria and other public health concerns, is a good example of industry and government pooling resources, expertise and influence to have a global impact.
